Poppy Playtime is an indie survival horror game in which the player, an ex-employee of the Playtime Co. Toy Factory, returns to the facility 10 years after the entire staff disappeared inside the building. At the beginning of the game, players receive a message claiming that the employees are still alive, but once inside the factory, they’re threatened by the terrifying Huggy Wuggy who comes to life and tries to kill them. Not much is known about what Huggy Wuggy is or where he came from, but the game draws multiple connections between him and the mysterious Experiment 1006.

Created in 1984, Huggy Wuggy is Playtime Co,’s most popular and best-selling toy, as well as the company’s mascot. However, the Huggy Wuggy that players are confronted with is nothing short of an abomination. A closer look at Huggy Wuggy reveals a sinister truth about the nature of this monster as he can be seen breathing when players first encounter him in the first area of the game, and he bleeds when he falls from the catwalk after the final chase. Additionally, a pair of human eyes can be seen inside his toy eyes, and these eyes will follow the player around, suggesting that they aren’t just there for show. Huggy is not just some type of murderous animatronic, but is actually a living, organic creature, turning this nightmarish toy into something even more twisted.

Huggy Wuggy isn’t the only living toy in the factory, however, as Poppy Playtime’s trailers have shown that Poppy herself has organic parts as well. Her eyes are bloodshot and follow the player, and her voice box bleeds when it’s removed from her neck. The fact that she insists she is a real girl takes on a much darker tone in this context, and with the connections between her and one of Playtime Co.’s employees, Stella Grayber, the game implies that Stella may have somehow been transformed into Poppy herself. If it’s true that Playtime Co. managed to find a way to transform human beings into living toys to achieve its goal of making the most lifelike toys on the market, then it’s likely that Huggy Wuggy and the rest of the toys in the factory have a similar origin story.
